Junior MTB coaching typically starts in April of each year and runs in line with school terms. Parents can book their children onto a coaching block that lasts up to seven weeks. Sessions run from 6pm to 7pm on a Wednesday evening, or 5:45pm to 7pm in the case of hill rides. The coaching team includes British Cycling coaches and MTB Leaders, and is supported by our ‘expert riders’.
We use Malvern College’s Nine Acres site, Peachfield Common as our central venue and meeting point. Coaching can take place within this area, or out on Peachfield Common itself as children’s riding skills progress.
Due to the increase in both popularity of the event and the skills of the young riders involved, we now take some groups out on the Malvern Hills for their sessions. In this case, we meet earlier at West of England Quarry car park. This allows us to develop skills in a natural trail environment and finish at Nine Acres at the same time as other groups. Parents with more than one child involved are able to drop off at both venues, and then collect them together at the end.
